Web15 aug. 2014 · The pads are by my estimate about 6mm on the outer pad and 5mm on the inner pad, they may even be more, but they are definitely 1 or 2 mm thicker than the backing plate that the friction material is attached to. I will not be changing for a while, but will keep an eye on them. I expect to get at least another 6 months (6000 miles) out of them. D

The Mk5 has a pad thickness sensor (where fitted) that is supposed to trigger around 6mm which is a lot of warning. If your brakes are well maintained you shouldn't have any issue with uneven wear side to side.

Most manufacturer’s service limits are at 3mm for brake pads. In both cases the pads not visible were below 1.5mm, in one case the brake pad was touching and scoring the disc.
